These are sand dunes, which is not what anyone expects a short way inland from a Javanese beach. Volcanic sand carried down from Merapi by the rivers, then pushed back inland by the sea wind, has built one of the few barchan dune fields anywhere in the tropics. Sandboards are rented at the entrance. It sits next to Parangtritis, so it slots into the same afternoon as the beach.
