Sonobudoyo holds the best collection of Javanese art outside Jakarta: krisses, masks, gamelan sets and wayang puppets, in a 1935 building beside the north square. The draw for most visitors is the wayang kulit it stages every evening, two hours of shadow play with a live gamelan, which is a far shorter commitment than the traditional overnight version. Easy to pair with the Kraton on the same day.
