Maha Bandula Park History & Significance

Maha Bandula Park was earlier called Tank Square, which was converted to a recreational area known as Fytche Square, named after Chief Commissioner of British Burma, Albert Fytche. The full-fledged construction of the park began in 1868, and gradual expansion took place in the later years. In 1935, the park was renamed Bandula Square, after the Burmese leader Bandula who played a significant role in the country's independence.

There was a white marble statue of Queen Victoria, which was replaced by an Independence tower in 1948, marking the end of the colonial rule.
