TAPROBANE ISLAND, Weligama Overview

Taprobane island is an island located near the Weligama bay, which is also known as the Sand Village. It is a tiny island, nearly two and a half acres and has one, single villa made in the 1920s! So, you can complete the entire tour of the land is just half a day! The villa is a great place to stay and enjoy the feeling of having a private villa all to yourself.

But don't be thinking that that's the best thing about this place. Even though the island is small, there are many activities one can take partake. Since the island is located 150 meters from the coast, the only way to reach here is by surfing or by boat, if you do not know how to swim. The height of the water is also quite low, reaching about 4 to 5 feet in height, at most.

Things to Do at Taprobane Island

There are many exciting things to do around the island such as:

Beaches
Not only does the island have a great beach near it, but the location of the island itself also marks as the centre from which other famous beaches can be visited.

Thalpe, Mirissa and Unawatuna beaches are some of the nearest ones. Not visited by many, even during the holiday season, you will be able to spend quality time amidst the peaceful scenario and clean sandy lands. The beaches can be visited within a single day trip, or extend as four days' trips, whichever is convenient for you. Tuk-Tuks and car rides for all are readily available.

Witnessing the Local Dance Traditions
If you are lucky enough, you might be able to see the Devil Dance, which is a popular local dance performed in the villages.
