Kabukicho, Tokyo Overview
Japan's largest nightlife and red-light district, and for most visitors a walk-through rather than a night out. The mainstream version is Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, opened in 2023, with an arcade, a food hall and live venues. Golden Gai's two hundred tiny bars and the yakitori alleys of Omoide Yokocho are next door. Never follow a street tout into a bar.
Known as the 'Sleepless District', Kabukicho is famous for its nightlife, hotels, restaurants, bars and arcades - a must-try for the adventurous traveller. Kabukicho is most famous for its host and hostess bars, where people are served and entertained exclusively by hosts in various themed costumes, maybe in a Japanese yukata or even in an English Butler's costume. Kabukicho is also no stranger to themed cafes and arcades, with a blast of pop culture. It would be advisable to carry some cash, for these places may be a little heavy on the purse and do not accept card payments.
