Kichijoji / Inokashira Park

Kichijoji is a neighbourhood in Musashino, western Tokyo, built around Kichijoji Station and the shopping streets leading south to Inokashira Park. The park, opened in 1917, centers on a long pond used for rowboats, with a small zoo, a Benzaiten shrine, and pathways favoured by street performers and cherry-blossom crowds every spring. Sun Road and the surrounding lanes are packed with cafes, boutiques, and izakayas. The Ghibli Museum sits at the park's southwest corner in neighbouring Mitaka, making the area a natural pairing for a half-day visit.

Kichijoji has topped Japanese magazine polls for the most desirable Tokyo neighbourhood to live in since the 1990s, thanks to its mix of green space and everyday city life. Inokashira Park, a five-minute walk from the station, was Japan's first suburban park and covers roughly 430,000 square metres across Musashino and Mitaka. Visitors rent swan boats on the pond, browse the small zoo and aquarium in Gotenyama, and watch musicians and artists set up along the paths. Back near the station, Sun Road and its side streets offer secondhand bookshops, record stores, and casual dining. The Ghibli Museum lies just beyond the park's southwest edge.
