Dechencholing Palace, Thimphu Overview

The three-storeyed lavish Dechencholing Palace is located in the heart of city and adds to its glory. Built in 1953, the wooden windows on the whitewashed walls makes for a spectacular sight. It is the residence of the country's royal family, but king does not reside here. Visiting this place gives a royal feeling to anyone who has the eyes to appreciate this marvellous structure.

It is a frequently visited site for meetings between Bhutan and India and other foreign nations. It is where important events, such as banquets for guests of Bhutan, are held. Apart from the grand exterior, the interior is also marvellous. There is a private chapel of Ashi Phuntsho Choden, which is beautifully decorated with paintings and carvings.

History of the Dechencholing Palace

Dechencholing Palace was built in 1953 to mark the coronation of Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the third king of Bhutan. Later in 1955, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the fourth king of Bhutan, was born here. The palace served as a residence for Ashi Phuntsho Choden, Jigme Dorji’s Queen Mother, where she lived as a nun.

The Architecture of the Dechencholing Palace

The three-storied palace is constructed in the traditional Bhutanese style. The whitewashed walls and sloping roof, without any use of iron nails, give the palace an authentic look. The well-maintained gardens and pond surrounding the palace give it a lush look. There is a private helipad also since it is an important venue for international meetings. The furniture inside the palace is encased in metal in repoussé technique superimposed on white velvet.

How To Reach Dechencholing Palace

Dechencholing Palace is located on the west bank of Thimphu Chhu. It is located 4 kilometres to the north of the Tashichho Dzong. The route starts from Yangchenphug and passes through Dechhen Lam.
