Changlimithang Stadium, Thimphu Overview

The national stadium of Bhutan, Changlimithang Stadium holds many events apart from that of sports' and has a rich history. It is founded on the battle ground of 1885, which holds a great political significance for Ugyen Wangchuk, the first king of Bhutan. Archery matches are conducted here and from 21st to 23rd February, the celebrations for King's birthday make this site a marvel to behold.

Changlimithang Stadium is one of the highest stadiums in the world, located at a height of 2300 meters above sea level. Currently, there are two full-sized operational synthetic fields in the stadium. It can accommodate 15000 people at one time. In fact, the wedding of Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the king of Bhutan, with Jetsun Pema took place here itself.

History of the Changlimithang Stadium

The Changlimithang Stadium is built on the 1885 battleground, which established the supremacy of Ugyen Wangchuck. Built-in 1974 to mark the coronation of Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the fourth king of Bhutan, it has gone through major renovations thrice. The first renovation took place in 2007, followed by one in 2011 and later in 2016.
