Mother of Victory Church, Thane Overview

Mother of Victory Church, located in Tikujiniwadi, Thane, is the only catholic church in India named after Mother Mary’s other name, Lady of Victory. The church is popular as a shrine because the statue of Mother Mary preserved inside it was bought from Wigratzbad, Germany. The popular belief that Mother Mary appeared a few times between the years 1919 and 1938 in the pilgrimage of Wigratzbad is the reason why pilgrims from all over the world travel to Mother of Victory Church to witness the holy statue.

History of the Church

Migrants from Kerala, who settled in Thane before the 16th Century, initially said their prayers in the local Latin Churches but soon the Kerala Catholic Association started conducting holy masses, Good Friday Services and other celebrations to preserve the culture and traditions of all the Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara Catholics as well as the Latin Rites. After two decades or so, the Diocese of Kalyan was established in 1988.

Father Edakkalathur started prayer services at two parishes, Majiwada and Manpada which went on to form a harmonious community with over 120 families who worked tirelessly for establishing an independent church. In 2002, they managed to create the Kuriakose Elias Chavara Community.

In February 2003, the Kalyan Diocese recognised the blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara Parish under its name, and the first-ever Marian Pilgrim Church, Mother of Victory Church, was inaugurated by bishop Mar Thomas Elavanal when the statue of the Virgin Mary of Witzgradbad was consecrated in the Church.
