Mahuli Fort, Thane Overview

Perched at a height of 2815 ft., atop a mighty hill, Mahuli Fort is not only the highest pinnacle point in all of Thane but is also a very popular trekking destination. Considered to be a haven for rock climbers and adventure enthusiasts, it is also a common favourite among nature lovers as it is surrounded by a dense green forest. The fort houses an open Shiva temple and three caves which draw a large tourist influx. It was originally occupied by Shahji- father of the Maratha warrior Shivaji. Besides, there is also a perennial drinking water cistern on the top. The fort has now been declared a protected monument and the green area surrounding the fort has been declared a sanctuary.

Trek to Mahuli Fort

Known to be a popular trekking spot, you can undertake a thrilling trek to the top of the hill. Ideal for both amateurs and professional trekkers, there are stone carved pathways that can lead you to the top. Aside from the exciting and adventurous time, you can also enjoy the beautiful scenery and stunning views of the valley below. You can also pack some food and enjoy it at the top amidst gorgeous views and pleasant ambiance.

What to See at Mahuli Fort

  1. Shahpur Darwaza is the entrance gate of the fort which is a major attraction at the fort.
  2. There are also three caves at the top which can accommodate up to 15 people. These caves also draw a lot of tourists and adventure enthusiasts.
  3. Another gate of the Mahuli Fort is called Kalyan Darwaza which you should also see. It is near the Konkan side of the fort. 
  4. There is also a small lake at the top which you should definitely visit. However, the lake remains dry for most of the year but it shines with water during the monsoons. 
  5. There are three other pinnacle points near Mahuli Fort that are also scaled by the trekkers. These points are called Navara, Navri, and Bhatoba.

Tips

  1. It is advised to wear comfortable shoes or footwear as the paths are slippery and you will also be required to walk a lot.
  2. Remember to carry food and water with you as there are no shops near the Mahuli Fort to sell refreshments. 
  3. If possible, carry a raincoat or an umbrella.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Mahuli Fort is during the rainy season when the lush greenery around the fort is at its peak. The water in the lake is also full and presents a pretty sight.

How to Reach

Asangaon is the nearest railway station to the Mahuli village from where you can reach the fort. If you are driving, you are to take the Mumbai - Nasik Highway to reach Asangaon. 5 km ahead from here is the Mahuli village. The trek to the fort starts at the base of the Mahuli Village.
