Sudhagad Fort, Thane Overview

Situated at a distance of 10 km from Pali Village in Maharashtra, Sudhagad Fort is one of the most ancient and also one of the most popular hill forts in Thane. Although currently in ruins, the fort is a haven for trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. Also known as Bhoraigad Fort or Bhorapgad Fort, the fort dates back to the 2nd century, the fort gets its name from the Bhorai devi Temple that is situated there. Besides, the top offers bewitching views of the valley below and sprawling green hill slopes adjacent to it. Lately, the entire area surrounding the fort has been declared as the Sudhagad Wildlife Sanctuary.

Features of Sudhagad Fort

Perched at a height of 620 m above sea level, the fort currently has a granary, a few toms, two enchanting lakes, a dilapidated house and the shrine. It boasts of three entrance gates, of which Maha Darwaza is the largest one. Formerly, it also had two Shiva temples which do not exist now. Only the Bhorai Devi temple is maintained and is in a functioning condition. From the vantage point, you can also spot the forts of Sarasgad, Korigad, Dhangad and Taila-Baila.

Trekking at Sudhagad Fort

Currently, Sudhagad Fort is one of the most popular tourists attractions and trekking destinations in the region. It takes about 1 to 2 hours to reach to the top from the base village of Thakurwadi. You won’t find any water cisterns on the way so it is advisable to carry as much water as you can. If you are trekking at night or you want to stay over, you can seek accommodation or shelter at Pantsachiv wada and Bhorai Mata Mandir.

How to Reach

To start the trek to Sudhagad Fort, you will have to reach the Pali village first. For this, you can board the train from Panvel to Roha at 7:00 AM in the morning from Platform No. 7. The train is bound for Sawantwadi but you will need to get down at Nagothane. After exiting the station, you will find several public transport options and tuk tuks that can take you to the Pali village.
