Semporna is a town on Borneo island located in the Malaysian state of Sabah. It is the capital of Semporna district in Tawau Division. Semporna is usually a stop while going to dive or snorkel at nearby islands of Mabul, Mataking, Sipadan, Maiga, Kapalai and several others.
An attractive feature of Semporna is the stilt houses referred to as water villages. At a 15 minute drive from Semporna is Bukit Tengkorak which is an archaeological heritage site. Another beautiful place to go is Boheydulang Island which can be reached via boat. Booking can be done in advance. It falls under the preserved marine park area. For adventurers, this island is a perfect go-to for arduous trekking through the rainforest.
Famous for scuba diving and snorkeling, a go-to place from Semporna is the nearby Sipadan Island. It offers a breathtaking experience in the turquoise crystal-clear water rich in marine life. However, tourists are required to show dive permits as the area comes under Marine Park. Snorkeling is another option and can be done easily by hopping islands on a speedboat. Some famous snorkeling spots can be found at Mataking Island, Pom Pom Island and Sibuan Island among many others. All these islands are located at a 30 to 50 minutes distance from Semporna.
