Sepilok is a small town located in the state of Sabah, around 25 km from Sandakan. Sepilok is popularly known for its Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre which is a perfect spot for ecotourism and to enjoy a laid back weekend. It is also known for the World’s only Sun Bear Sanctuary, the Sun Bear Conservation Center. 

Another major highlight is the Rainforest Discovery Center. Sepilok makes a perfect spot to spend a day witnessing animals in their natural habitat while trekking on the trails. The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation is the prime destination at Sepilok. Aimed at rehabilitating orphaned Orangutans, the center was established in 1964. Best time to visit the centre is during the feeding time that is 10 AM to 3 PM but the center closes from 12PM to 2PM for visitors.

How to Reach Sepilok

How to Reach Overview

Sepilok is accessible through roadways. Bus is one of the most ideal alternatives to reach Sepilok. Direct buses operate from Kota Kinabalu and Semporna. If coming from Kota Kinabalu, take the bus to Sandakan from Inanam bus station. The bus charges RM 45 per person and takes about 6 hours. If traveling from Semporna, take the Tung Ma bus to Sandakan. Per person, the charge is about RM 40 and it takes about 5 hours.

From Sandakan, take bus 14 which costs RM 7 per person one way. It runs every hour from 9 AM to 2 PM. Taxi is another option. From Sandakan to Sepilok, the taxi charge is RM 40. A taxi from Sandakan Airport to Sepilok costs RM 50. Another alternative is to hire a car and take the road towards Sepilok passing through Sandakan.

Local transport in Sepilok

Orangutan Rehabilitation Center and Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center are located side by side and traveling on foot is a good option. Apart from that, hiring a taxi or a rental car is the ideal alternative to get around Sepilok.
