Tropical Spice Garden, Teluk Bahang Overview

Located at Jalan Teluk Bahang, Penang Tropical Spice Garden is an 8-acre bio-diverse living museum showcasing over 500 living specimens of lush and exotic flora and fauna from around the world. It has been recognized as one of the best flower gardens in Malaysia.

The Tropical Spice Garden can be best explored by opting for either a live guided tour or an audio tour which takes one to the waterfalls, stream crossings and structures made of recycled organic materials. Several educational programs are also hosted for children to be able to get closer to nature in a fun way. The Penang Tropical Spice Garden has been built at the site of once abandoned rubber plantation by David and Rebecca Wilkinson with the hope of instilling and nurturing nature awareness and appreciation.

Penang Tropical Spice Garden Entry Fees

One can choose to explore on your own but for the best and detailed experience, it is recommended that you opt either for a Guided Tour, Audio Guided Tour or a Night Walk.

Guided Tour: Available at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM and 1:30 PM.
Adult: MYR 48, Children: MYR 25, Student: MYR 38

Audio Guided Tour: Available in English, Bahasa, Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic, German and French. There are 69 audio stops in total.
Adult: MYR 31, Children: MYR 18, Student: MYR 25

Night Walk: Walk starts by 8:00 PM and ends by 10:00 PM.
Adult: MYR 85, Children: MYR 65, Student: MYR 65
For student ticket, a valid student identity card has to be shown upon arrival.
Entry is free for children of 3 years of age and below.

Programmes & Attractions at Tropical Spice Garden

Several educational programs and activities are organized by Tropical Spice Garden for children under the age of 12 to bring them closer to nature. These programs approximately take 3-3.5 hours.

Spice In My Kitchen: This program teaches the children the ancient spice trade and about the secrets of spices within food and medicine with the help of puzzles, races and other activities.

My Kampung Garden: It helps the children to discover the relationship between humankind and the Earth and the joys of gardening with its gardening sessions.

Life In My Rainforest: It provides the children with a knowledge of traditional uses and benefits of natural sources and unveils the secrets of the rainforest ecosystem with the charismatic dusky leaf monkey through some detective work and a show and tell tour.

Nature Box: This is a kid-focused guided tour of the locally grown species and herbs and a nature-based scavenger hunt.

Spice and Herb Walk: With a span of 1–1.5 hours, spice and herb walk is as an introductory guided walk, explaining the children about the uses and stories of herbs and spices.

Nature Camp: An overnight camp is organised at Penang Tropical Spice Garden which includes several different activities performed in the safe vicinity of the garden.  

Flora and Fauna

The Tropical Spice Garden in Penang comprises of over 500 living specimens of exotic flora and fauna. It has three jungle trails: Ornamental Trail, Spice Trail and Jungle Trail, taking one to different parts of the garden. Each compound features a different plant collection such as species and herbs, jungle flora and aquatic plants. There are signboards which exhibit the name of the species and explain the uses of the plant.

How to Reach Penang Tropical Spice Garden

Bus: One can board a bus to reach the Tropical Spice Garden:
  • Take Rapid Penang Bus 101 from Weld Quay to Teluk Bahang
  • Take Rapid Penang Bus 102 from Penang International Airport to Teluk Bahang
  • Beach Route stop number 19 is the nearest Penang Hop On Hop Off stop
Car: From Georgetown, it will take approximately 22 minutes to reach
From Batu Ferringhi, it will take approximately 4 minutes to reach
