Federation Square, Melbourne Overview
Federation Square sits at the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets, directly opposite Flinders Street Station in Melbourne's CBD. Opened in 2002, the 3.2-hectare precinct is built over railway lines and centres on a paved public square framed by angular, sandstone-and-glass buildings in a deconstructivist style. It houses the Ian Potter Centre (NGV Australia), the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), and the Koorie Heritage Trust, alongside cafes and bars, plus a large outdoor screen used for public broadcasts, festivals and free events year-round.
Nicknamed Fed Square, the precinct was designed by Lab Architecture Studio with Bates Smart and Dutch landscape architects Karres en Brands, opening to the public on 26 October 2002 after a final construction cost of about $467 million. Its buildings use a fractal, pinwheel-tiled facade of sandstone, zinc and glass, deliberately breaking from Melbourne's street grid to form an irregular plaza. Beyond its galleries and ACMI's cinema and exhibitions, the square functions as the city's default outdoor meeting point and event venue, hosting AFL Grand Final live sites, Australian Open broadcasts, festivals and public art. It was added to the Victorian Heritage Register in 2019.
