Rabbit Island History & Significance

Koh Ton Say is Khmer means spreading out, which comes from the another Khmer word Rum Say. King Sa Kor ordered his troops to spread out away from the mainland to the neighbouring islands while defending his empire. During the later period in the early 19th century, prisoners were imprisoned in Koh Ton Say, where they worked on various things to sustain life on the island. The prisoners set up the water system and built administrative buildings, all of which were abandoned decades later after the war broke out.

After many years, human habitation resumed when a few fishing families migrated to the island. Now, there are more than 100 homes with many families settling here. Fishing and farming are the sources of their livelihood along with some income from tourism which has picked up in recent years.
