Secret Lake, Kep Overview

Locally called as Tomnop Tek Krolar, the Secret Lake is located near the provincial town of Kampot in Cambodia. It lies between the pepper plantations and the Phnom Chhnork cave, and unlike its name, it's among the popular tourist attractions in Kampot.

The Secret Lake is an artificial lake that was constructed during the Khmer Rouge as an irrigation dam, and its size varies according to the seasons. Nestling between rising hills and green paddy fields, the Secret Lake is an ideal place to relax while traveling here.

Secret Lake History & Significance

Tomnop Tek Krolar acquired its nickname Secret Lake, not due to its secret location. It was constructed during the Khmer Rouge period by slave labourers, who were captivated prisoners belonging to neighbouring villages. Thousands of these labourers died while building this dam owing to harsh climatic conditions and poor support they received. All the killed are believed to be buried nearby, and the name signifies the secret location of these mass graves. You can go swimming, tubing, kayaking or use water paddle cycles when the water levels are not high in the Secret Lake.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit is in the early morning to spend more time or the late afternoon when the weather is pleasant.

How To Reach Secret Lake

The Secret Lake is closer to Kampot than Cambodia although you can easily reach from both the places by a Tuk Tuk which would cost about 5 USD for a return trip or by renting a motorbike for about 8 USD per day. It takes 25 minutes to get to the lake.
