International Buddhist Museum, Kandy Overview

The International Buddhist Museum documents the spread of Buddhism across more than 17 countries, from India and Japan to Thailand and Myanmar, through scrolls, statues, and artefacts. It sits within the same royal-palace complex as the Temple of the Tooth and National Museum.

The museum covers two floors and about 20 rooms; budget an hour if you want to read through the exhibits properly. Entry is bundled with the Temple of the Tooth ticket, making it an easy add-on rather than a separate trip.

History of World Buddhist Museum

The site was the former Palace of the King of Kandy, Wimaladharmasuriya. During the colonial takeover, the British constructed a Victorian-era building which housed the Kandy Kachcheri. The beautiful architecture and carvings are still present today. The museum came into existence in the year 2011, but its contents date back to the 3rd century BC, housing learnings from both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism.
