Meenmutty Falls, Kalpetta Overview

Located 29 km away from Kalpetta in Wayanad district, Meenmutty waterfalls is considered as one of the largest waterfalls in the Kalpetta region and the second largest in Kerala. It is also one of the most thrilling and beautiful natural attractions in Wayanad. Nestled away in the lap of a jungle trek, the cascading waterfall of Meenmutty makes up for a dazzling view. The bubbly water of this mighty waterfall flows in three tiers and is located near the Neyyar Reservoir area. The experience of climbing through the rocks to reach this enchanting destination is one of a kind and makes this place a prevalent tourist location.

In Malayalam, Meenmutty means a place where fishes are blocked. Cascading down three different tiers that each have an altitude of 300 ft, Meenmutty offers a splendid view and can be reached by an exciting 2 km jungles trek. This stunning fall is cuddled up in the verdant Mepadi forest range and makes up as one of the prime attractions for adventure seekers.

Meenmutty offers an ideal place to lie back and relax away from the hustle-bustle of everyday life and experience a beautiful view of the sunset. It provides a fantastic view of over 1000 ft of cascading water and a picture-perfect backdrop for trekking activities. Activities to do at Meenmutty Falls

Photography: Blessed with enrapturing natural beauty, the Meenmutty Falls is the perfect place to get some fantastic shots of Mother Nature. Be it the lush greenery of the mountains or the blue waters of the surging falls, the scenery of this destination is as picturesque as it can get. The backdrop of the bright blue skies against the sparkling white water of the falls creates a stunning contrast that you would surely want to capture with your cameras.

Trek: The waterfall can be accessed by taking a 2 km picturesque jungle trek through the Wayanad-Ooty road. Each of its three tiers requires a separate trek through a dense deciduous forest. The first of the three tiers can be reached by walking for about 500 m from the main entrance. This layer is smaller, having low depth and is ideal for swimming. The second tier can be reached by trekking about 500 m through steps built over boulders. The trek runs parallel to the downstream river and offers beautiful views of the stream and thick vegetation. The trek to the third tier is the most difficult as it requires some walking through the flow on slippery rocks. There are ropes present to aid the walk. The walk up this tier is steep in some places and takes about 10-15 mins to trek up this 500. However, all this effort is well rewarded when you reach the top of the waterfall and witness the breathtaking view of the nearby Banasura Sagar dam and the valley.

Best Time To Visit Meenmutty Falls

The best time to visit is from October to May as the summers in the region can be quite hot and humid that might spoil your fun and the monsoon can be dangerous because of high inflow of water and slippery rocks. Thus, it's best to visit Meenmutty Falls during the winter and the spring months.

Tips For Visiting Meenmutty Falls

1. Avoid going during the rainy season as during that time the waterfall is extremely dangerous due to high inflow and have taken many lives.
2. Don't confuse with Meenmutty Falls near Meppad, which was closed a few years ago.
3. Taking into consideration the rugged and undulated topography, it is advisable to hire a guide along for the trek.

How To Reach Meenmutty Falls

Buses ply from Kalpetta to the main entrance of the lake at regular interval. The best way to reach the fall is by taking a 2 km trek Kozhikode-Ooty interstate highway. The trek can be tiresome, and a little difficult but the serene waterfall is worth the effort.
