Regina Mundi, Johannesburg Overview

Regina Mundi is the largest Roman Catholic Church in South Africa, situated in the Soweto township of Johannesburg. The church is home to several artworks, including The Madonna and Child of Soweto painting which features a black Virgin Mary holding a black baby Jesus.

There are numerous bullet marks on the marble Altar and Crucifix from a 1976 student uprising. The structure has an A-shaped facade made of bricks, beautiful stained glass and a spacious interior that can accommodate about 7,000 people. Around the church is a lovely garden with memorial stones donated by Japanese Christians. Dating to the 1960s, it is also a historical attraction since it played a key role in the anti-Apartheid movement by providing shelter to numerous activists and is often called “the people’s church”.
