For decades this was the only working railway in Nepal, a narrow-gauge line laid in the 1930s to carry timber and later filled with passengers sitting on the roof. It has since been rebuilt to broad gauge and runs to Jaynagar in Bihar. The ride is short and slow and goes through villages rather than scenery, which is the point of taking it.
