Science City Kapurthala, Jalandhar Overview

Science City Kapurthala, otherwise known as Pushpa Gujral Science City is a haven for science enthusiasts established by the Government of Punjab. At a distance of 15 km from Jalandhar, it is spread across an area of 72 acres. Its motto is to help people, especially younger children, develop an interest in the working of the physical world around them.

It uses concepts from physical, applied, natural and social sciences, engineering, technology, agriculture, health sciences, energy, industries, human evolution, environment, ecosystems, Jurassic parks as well as other as other intriguing aspects of space, IT, nuclear science, robotics and biotechnology. It constitutes of a theatre and digital planetarium endorsing an engaging outlook onto the undiscovered world. There is a climate change theatre dedicated to educating younger and older minds to help save this planet. There are several other intriguing manifestations of abstract concepts. It is focused on inculcating a creative insight into how the world works and how can humanity as a civilisation succeed without destroying its natural habitat. The project also upholsters education beyond age, social strata and profession. They promote learning through experience rather than textbook hindsight and mugging-up.

More About Pushpa Gujral Science City

In an era of encouraging learning through visual aids and experience, this project does exactly the same in the field of science and technology. Being one of its kind, it is the biggest in Northern India built over different phases. The first phase was inaugurated by the then Governor of Punjab, His Excellency Lt. Gen (retd) S.F Rodrigues, March 19, 2005. It is a joint venture between the Central Government and the Government of Punjab with an investment of Rs. 100 crores. The Science city aims to educate people through a blend of fun-filled activities, audio-visual representations and 3D models, inculcate scientific aptitude and encourage imagination and creativity. In a country where more than half of the population remains uneducated or are deprived of formal education, this initiative is a step towards enlightening the crowd for better apprehension of technology and science.

The visiting hour is from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM while tickets can be bought only until 5:00 PM.

Science City Kapurthala Ticket

The PGSC is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day of the year. The last ticket can be bought at 5:00 PM, and therefore permission to explore the City after 5:00 PM.

There are several packages among which visitors are free to pick any. Entry for children below 3 years is free. Entry fee for children (3 to 18 years), adults (18 to 60 years) and senior citizens (over 60 years) varies for each package chosen. There is a family package that includes two adults and two children.

Professional video camera ticket is charged INR 100 while digital camera ticket is charged INR 50. Food coupons are mandatory to buy and are charged an additional Rs. 20 per person. There are online tickets available as school packages for over 25 students too with a complimentary ticket for the teacher.

Attractions at Science City Kapurthala

The City is proliferated with physical manifestations of scientific concepts. There are several explorations bound to set your mind afar.
  • Space Theatre - The space theatre uses the art of film and projects them on the dome of the structure to provide the audience with a 360-degree angle, and an almost real experience of engaging in the film. The narration is in either Hindi or English.
  • Digital Planetarium - The planetarium propels people to embrace the wonders of outer space through stars, suns and constellations. The narration is available in both Hindi and English.
  • LASER Theatre - This arena provides an interplay of mind-boggling laser images that captivate the interests of people.
  • 3D Theatres - The 3D theatres play with the surroundings and envision creatures reaching out of the screen, or objects being flown in one’s direction.
  • Flight Simulator - This provides a vivid experience of sitting in a chair inside an artificial flight with a screen hanging at the front. The graphics are designed in an immersive fashion and provide a real out-of-the-world experience.
  • Earthquake Simulator - The Earthquake Simulator is designed to mimic an earthquake. It can generate vibrations up to 6.5 in magnitude.
  • Space and Aviation Gallery - The gallery manifests models and images of spacecraft, shuttles, planets and stars with an in-depth explanation into how each works.
  • Renewable Energy Education Park (REEP) - REEP constitutes of a Solar Centre, Hydel Power Centre, Solar Restaurant, Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant and other scientific attractions designed to educate the youth about conservation of energy and how renewable resources can be used to practice conservation of power.
  • Health Gallery - Health Gallery dives into the biological functioning of the human body with interactive models of the brain and heart. It provides an in-depth explanation of enzymes, DNA and machines used in operational clinics such as PET scan.
  • Science of Sports - This section is dedicated to the sports segment of science. There are elaborate models associated with the working of muscles while playing sports like cricket, volleyball, badminton etc. It also explains concepts from physics such as momentum, inertia, motion and role of gravity.
  • Virtual Reality Exhibit - The VR zone engages ideas of how ATMs work and scanning machines function. It is further subdivided into six segments: Marble Marshal, Molecular Bubbles, Virtual Butterflies, Shadow Harp, Virtual Sand and Magical Flowers based on shadow control.
  • Fun Science - The exhibits here use principles of refraction, reflection, sound waves and vibration to intrigue and fascinate its visitors.
  • Dinosaur Park - The three periods: Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous, have all been explained using magnanimous models of dinosaurs, and everything leading from the earth’s habitat to their extinction during these periods.
  • Defense Gallery - The Defense Gallery documents progressions in fighter planes, their construction and physics revolving around flying them.
  • Life through Ages - This segment includes the evolutionary expansion of the universe and narrows down to earth. The gallery provides an insight into the formation of all living creatures, from their origin till this age of nanotechnology.

There is a parking space available for buses, cars and two-wheelers. There is also a driver’s restroom available. There are hostel facilities for teachers and students with separate dorms for boys and girls. Accommodation is included for 100 students and ten teachers for INR 100 per night.

Tips for Visiting

It is recommended to plan a trip for at least two days to the Science City in order to cover everything and feed your curiosity. However, if you are on a tight schedule, it is better to research the place first, shortlist the spots you would not want to miss and directly head for those. While you are nearby, be sure not to miss the State Gurudwara, Katarpur Gurudwara, Wonderland Theme Park and of course, the Golden Temple of Amritsar which is just 15.7 km from Pushpa Gujral Science City.

Activities at the Science City

Exploring the Night Sky
PGSC provides individuals with an opportunity to delve into the moon and stars. However, this is permissible on clear nights with no weather fluctuations. The timings to watch the night sky are from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and the entry fee is INR 30 for students/teachers and INR 50 for adults.

Convention Hall and Hostel
PGSC organizes several seminars for all age groups for the purpose of which it has a Convention Hall. The bookings are subject to prior notice, and rates depend on the number of hours to be spent in the Hall.

How To Reach Science City Kapurthala

The Pushpa Gujral Science City Kapurthala is at a distance of 15 km from Jalandhar. There are several buses available on the route to Kapurthala, which is 5 km away from the Science City. However, most of the buses stop at the gate of Pushpa Gujral Science City, making commutation easier. Jalandhar Railway Station is 17 km from the Science City. This distance can be covered via a private vehicle, an auto or a bus. A taxi would cost approximately INR 500.
The Raja Sansi Airport at Amritsar is the nearest to PGSC and is located at a distance of 80 km. This distance can be covered by hiring a taxi directly at the airport. There is bus transportation available from the airport to Jalandhar too. It is also common and convenient to hire a taxi from Jalandhar or Kapurthala, the charges for which may come to an approximate of INR 500.
