VOC Galangan, Jakarta Overview

Vereenigde Oost Indische Compagnie (VOC) Galangan is an old shipyard in Batavia. This shipyard served as an important commercial link for the Dutch during the VOC era. The shipyard originally had four faces but now it has two main buildings which have Chinese cafe and restaurant. Many other events like weddings and birthdays occasionally happen here as well.

VOC Galangan is an interesting place where one can catch a glimpse of the 18th Century Dutch shipyards and warehouses that stood on the side. The main building dates back to the year 1628, overlooking is a place with greenery and shade which makes for a nice place to wander or unwind.

Things to Do

The shipyard is a unique place to get an insight into the history of the country. The shipyard was burned down in the year 1721, and it today separates two buildings one towards the north and the other in the south.

The north part is dotted with some amazing cafes and restaurants offering delicious and mouth-watering Chinese cuisine. The southern part comprises the famous VOC Galangan café which was once the residence of the ruler of Jakarta, Prince Jayawikarta. Beside the café is a lodge which was destroyed by the British when they captured the town.

Heading over to the east side of the VOC Galangan café one will come across a beautiful Dutch fort which was once a stronghold of Mauritius and today functions as a cinema hall.

Thus, there is a lot to do from getting enthralled by the history of the place, to grabbing some delicious delicacies along with catching up on a movie while one is at this magnificent shipyard.
