Pammakaristos Church, Istanbul Overview
Pammakaristos Church, also known as the Fethiye Mosque, stands in the Carsamba quarter of Fatih and holds the third-largest set of Byzantine mosaics in Istanbul after Hagia Sophia and Chora. The parekklesion, the side chapel that houses them, is temporarily closed to visitors for renovation.
The best known of the mosaics shows the Pantocrator ringed by Old Testament prophets, set directly beneath the dome. The church is generally dated to the 11th century, with the side chapel added around 1310. It was converted into the Fethiye Mosque in the 1590s; the main building remains a mosque, while the parekklesion holding the mosaics served as a museum from 1949. That chapel is currently shut for renovation, so the mosaics cannot be seen at present.
