Guwahati War Memorial, Guwahati Overview

Located near the Dighalipukhuri park in Latasil of Guwahati, Guwahati War Memorial is dedicated to the martyrs who fought for the nation and died in the process. The foundation of the memorial was laid on 18th May, 2015; however, the site was open for public visit in December 2016. Established as a mark of respect for the heroes who sacrificed their lives for our homeland, the memorial aims to spread the feeling of patriotism among the younger generations and for the mass acknowledgement of gallant sacrifices by our fearless soldiers.

Built with the objective to show respect for our martyrs, the War Memorial is an outcome of brilliant architecture, design and thought; and is a popular tourist spot in the city. The memorial houses a replica of ‘Amar Jawan’ and a some wonderful imitations of the Saraighat battle. All in all, the site a beautiful initiative by Rajya Sainik Board of the State government and an amazing way to add beauty to the historical spot.

Architecture of the Guwahati War Memorial

The beautiful park has been created brilliantly with an eye for detail. The entrance is decorated with a mighty army tank donated by Indian Army and Indian Air Force which was used in the war. A few steps further below is the excellent portrayal of the Great Sariaghat Battle between the Mughals and the Ahoms. The story is weaved around the chief warrior Lachit Barphukan and the idea is to let the people of Assam know about the sacrifices and the wars fought in order to save Assam from the enemies. There are also a few sculptures on a boat showcasing war scenes in water.

Besides this, the memorial also displays scenes from Kargil war, attack on Karachi by Indian Navy in 1971 and Sino -Indian War. A replica of ‘Amar Jawan’ is also present here. The memorial also has green gardens to sit and relax and has an all around environment of nationalism and patriotism.

How To Reach Guwahati War Memorial

Guwahati is well connected through state-run buses, taxi cabs and auto rickshaws. Guwahati War Memorial is located near Dighalipukhuri park in Latasil; you can either drive down or hire a private vehicle. Alternatively, you can take a public bus to reach your destination.
