Galle International Stadium is a cricket stadium in Galle, Sri Lanka, situated near the Galle fort and surrounded on two sides by the Indian Ocean. It is considered to be one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world.

The Galle International Cricket Stadium was known as ‘The Esplanade’ before it was brought up to international cricket standards. It is now the home ground of the Galle Cricket Club. This stadium is known as one of the luckiest venues for the Sri Lankan national cricket team.

History of Galle International Cricket Stadium

The ground was constructed in 1876 as a race course. Eventually, the racing ceased, and the field was used for cricket matches more than races. It was in 1927 that the ground was declared as a cricket stadium officially. The first test match was played on the field on 3 June 1998. This match was played between the Sri Lankan team and the team of New Zealand. The match resulted in a win for Sri Lanka by an innings and 16 runs thus making this stadium lucky for the team.

The stadium is on Colombo Road in Galle. You can travel by bus or by train to reach Galle. The cheapest way to get to Galle is by bus. Get down at the Galle Central Bus Station and then take a cab or Tuk Tuk to Colombo Road.
