Tochoji, Fukuoka Overview

Founded by Kukai in 806 and said to be his oldest temple in Japan, holding the Fukuoka Daibutsu, the largest seated wooden Buddha in the country, and a five-storey cypress pagoda finished in 2011 without nails. The hall is free. Photography inside the Buddha hall is not allowed, which is the thing visitors most often get wrong.
