The first Zen temple founded in Japan, established in 1195 by Eisai, who brought both Zen and tea back with him from China. Free, always open, and almost always quiet, which is rather the point: it sits a short walk from Tochoji in the same temple quarter but takes a fraction of the visitors. There is no grand hall to queue for, just gravel, gates and old trees.
