Kushida Shrine, Fukuoka Overview

Founded in 757 and the ceremonial heart of Hakata Gion Yamakasa, the July festival in which teams race one-tonne floats through the streets at dawn. The reason to come at any other time of year is that one of the decorated kazariyama floats stands in the grounds permanently, so you can see the thing the whole festival is built around. The grounds are free.
