It was plundered in the 15th century first, and then during the Dutch revolt changed hands many times between the Spanish and the Dutch. It finally became a Dutch city in 1629. Major development began during the industrial revolution of the 19th century. The canal system was evolved, and the roads and railways were constructed. The industrial production grew rapidly which was only accelerated by the founding of the electronics giant Philips. The excessive growth continued in the 20th century as hordes of people began flocking to the city and population increased rapidly. The city though received a great deal of damage during the second WW, and a lot of it's rebuilding saw the loss of historical buildings and heritage. Today Eindhoven is the capital of industrial design and a great symbol of modernity in the Netherlands.
