Everest Museum (HMI), Darjeeling Overview

Established in 1957, the Everest Museum or Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) museum stands as a testament to the rich history and culture of mountaineering in the Himalayan region. Its objectives include facilitating educational activities on mountaineering and preserving the works of Himalayan art and culture, attracting nearly half a million tourists, mountaineers, and researchers annually.

The museum's main attraction lies in its diverse exhibits, showcasing the Himalayan flora, fauna, and the art and culture of the region. Visitors are drawn to sections displaying the evolution of mountaineering equipment, including the gear used during the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. Situated in the center of HMI, the museum offers a magnificent view of Kanchenjunga, adding to its allure.

Exhibits and Collections

Comprising models, paintings, sculptures, photographs, manuscripts, books, and artifacts, the museum offers a comprehensive overview of mountaineering history and Himalayan life. Divided into three sections—Mountaineering History, Mount Everest Expedition, and A Panorama of Himalayan Life—the museum boasts a wide range of exhibits, including relief maps of the Himalayan range, climbing equipment, flags, badges, medals, and artifacts documenting mankind's fascination with conquering Mount Everest.

Mountaineering History Section

This section features a relief map of the Himalayan range, showcasing prominent peaks, glaciers, and river systems. Visitors can explore artifacts related to climbing techniques and equipment, as well as flags, badges, and medals from Alpine clubs worldwide.

Mount Everest Section

Documenting mankind's quest to conquer Mount Everest, this section chronicles the peak's discovery and naming, alongside artifacts and exhibits detailing various Everest expeditions throughout history.

A Panorama of Himalayan Life

Offering insights into Himalayan art, culture, and socio-economic life, this section displays artifacts, models, rock samples, minerals, and photographs depicting the region's lifestyle, religion, and wildlife. Notable exhibits include the Veb Carl Zeiss telescope, gifted by Adolf Hitler to General Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana, showcasing the strong ties between HMI and the Government of Nepal. Additionally, there are displays on traditional clothing, endangered animals, and the flora and fauna of the Himalayan region.
