Huay Kaew Waterfall, Chiang Mai Overview

A seasonal waterfall, the Huay Kaew Waterfall is the closest waterfall to the Chiang Mai City, located at the bottom of the Doi Suthep Mountain Range National Park, right next to the Chiang Mai Zoo. One of the major attractions of this place is the breathtaking view from the waterfall, which are picturesque because of its natural beauty. There are also small pools of water to dip in which make the Huay Kaew Waterfall enjoyable for adults and children alike.

Being a seasonal waterfall, the water does dry out during the summers. However, it is full after the rains, making the place nice, cool and refreshing. A lovely countryside area, the Huay Kaew Waterfall is quite peaceful. The area around the falls is filled with various kinds of flora and fauna including unique kinds of vegetations and mammals.

Things to Do at Huay Kaew Waterfall

1. Picnic: This place is a famous picnic spot, especially for the locals. It is a nice and beautiful place to spend ones holiday in. One can buy picnic mats here for THB 20.

2. Swimming: As both children and adults are allowed entry here, they can easily swim in few of the deeper stream pools, though one should be careful with temperature of the water, as it is extremely cold. There are a number of stalls selling snacks and drinks for refreshments.

3. Hiking: One can also go hiking up the mountain rocks surrounding the waterfall. There is a path on the right hand side of Huay Kaew Waterfall. This leads to a viewpoint on top of one of the lower mountains called the Wang Bua Ban Viewpoint. Though hiking is an exciting and adventurous time pass, one should be well equipped and be extremely careful as the rocks are very slippery.

Best Time to Visit

Since the Huay Kaew Waterfall is seasonal, you will not find water here throughout the year, especially during the summer. Ironically, this waterfall is known for the spate of its water. Thus, the months after the rains are the best time to visit the place.

How To Reach Huay Kaew Waterfall

The beautiful fall is located just at the end of the Doi Suthep Mountain ranges, on the Huay Keaw Road, right after the Chiang Mai zoo, on the left hand side. The access to this place is through the back of the Buddhist Monastery – Kruba Srivichai Monument. It is a five minute walk from the car park.

It is very convenient to reach Huay Keaw Waterfalls from the Chiang Mai city centre. There are these red taxis called songtaew that are shared by a number of people. These taxis cost THB 30 to THB 40 from the city centre. You can also travel by the tuk tuk (local three-wheeler taxi). They charge around THB 100 to reach Huay Keaw Waterfalls from Chiang Mai.
