Afrikaans Language Monument, Cape Town Overview

The Afrikaans Language Monument was built to celebrate the history of the Afrikaans language. It is located in the picturesque region of Paarl in the Western Cape province. The uniquely constructed monument is famous for its convex and concave structures portraying the influence of different languages and cultures on Afrikaans through the decades.

Visitors can see the influence of different cultures like Western European culture, Malay culture, KhoiKhoi language, and many others through the tall obelisk-style columns reflecting history. Afrikaans is the language used by southern Africa, and it came into existence due to the Protestant settlers during the 17th century. Inside the monument is a 57 meters high column that symbolizes the growth of Afrikaans. The monument complex has a hiking trail leading to a large amphitheatre. Replicating the beauty of nature, a miniature version of the Paarl mountain is created in the middle of the site. It also houses the Green Gallery, an open gallery depicting and supporting the works of Jan Van.
