Iziko South African Museum, Cape Town Overview

The Iziko Museum of South Africa is a national museum located in the Company’s Garden in Cape Town. Its collections date back to thousands of years and include African archeology, paleontology and zoological artefacts. It has four levels and the exhibits vary from fossils, rock art, meteorites, marine animals and more.

On the ground level, there are collections and exhibitions that throw light on the people of past. Besides, there are Karoo fossils, ocean animal fossils, whale casts and skeletons, etc. However, the first level of the museum is the most exciting of all as the Iziko Planetarium is located here. An audio and visual exhibition, the shows are educative and fun for adults and children. The first floor also houses meteorites, shark skeletons etc.

Level two displays mammals, birds, floral extinct, a history of the museum and other displays about African heritage. The final level has the Karoo fossils and a reconstruction of what the therapsids (ancient mammal reptile) besides other displays. There are also other exhibits on minerals, dinosaurs, Table Mountains, mind space, stone tools, traditional clothes, insects and much more. The National Gallery is next to the Iziko Museums of South Africa and can be explored along with a stroll in the Company’s Garden after a visit to the museum.
