Kenya, famous for its amazing wildlife, beautiful scenery, and rich culture, has opened its doors visa-free to global visitors, including those from India from January 2024. However, Indian nationals must obtain Kenya's electronic travel authorization (eTA) online before travelling for tourism purposes.

What is Kenya eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)?

The Kenya eTA, like an e-visa, is a partly automated system that checks if you are eligible to travel to Kenya. Unlike traditional visa procedures, there's no need for an embassy interview. Instead, applicants provide personal information and answer eligibility questions online. Although the eTA is approved by the government, it doesn't guarantee entry; immigration officers make that decision upon arrival.

When applying, travellers must provide personal information and answer eligibility questions. It's important to apply at least 3 days before travelling to ensure proper authorization, with applications accepted up to 3 months in advance. However, for sufficient processing time, it's recommended to submit applications at least 2 weeks before travelling. It's wise to apply soon after booking accommodations and transportation.

Kenya eTA requirements for Indians

To visit Kenya visa-free, Indian travellers will need:
  • A valid passport with at least six months' validity and a blank page.
  • A recent passport photo or selfie for the application.
  • Contact details (home address, phone number, email).
  • Travel information, including flight details (arrival flight number, initial departure date for connecting flights).
  • Proof of hotel booking (or an invitation letter if staying with friends).
  • Credit/debit card details for payment, if necessary.

Kenya eTA Fees

The fee for the eTA is $32.50 per traveler plus bank and processing fees. This can approximately cost INR 2900 per person, depending on the exchange rate on the day of application.

Kenya eTA Processing Time

The processing time for the Kenya eTA typically takes three working days. Applications can be submitted up to 3 months in advance. However, to ensure sufficient processing time, it's advisable to submit applications at least 2 weeks before travelling.

Kenya eTA Validity

The Kenya eTA allows a single entry into the country for up to 90 days. This period starts from the date the eTA is approved, not the date of entry.

Tips for applying for Kenya eTA for Indians

  • Only apply for the eTA after arranging your transportation and accommodation.
  • If you're travelling with children under 18, make sure their application is filled out by a legal guardian, parent, or accompanying adult. It's best for families to apply together.
  • Consider downloading the "Kenya Travel Authorization" mobile app if you travel frequently to Kenya or have multiple upcoming trips. This app allows you to securely store your travel documents and profile on your phone for future reference.

Process for Applying for Kenya eTA
