Best Time To Visit Mexico

Shoulder season in Mexico lasts from September to October in the autumn, and April to May in the spring. During these months, both the temperature and rainfall are very low.. The coastal waters get colder and are ideal for dipping your toes in. However, the days begin to become less sunny in the winter month. The footfall during this period is moderate, and therefore, the prices for hotels and resorts are lesser than that during the autumn months.

The summer months of June to August in Mexico, also known as the hurricane months, constitute the offseason. These months see a steady rise in temperature and even an increase in very unpredictable summer rains. The probability of devastating hurricanes and other such natural calamities hitting the coast of Mexico is also the maximum during this season. Therefore, it is suggested to avoid these months to plan a holiday to Mexico, not just for the holiday experience but also for safety reasons.

The summer months (June to August) in Mexico are also referred to as the hurricane season. The Caribbean coast is greatly affected by hurricanes and tropical storms, especially during July and August. During the hurricane season, the amount of rainfall substantially increases, which also multiplies the possibilities of inland floods. The chances that a hurricane will ruin your vacation is pretty low, but it is always better to take the necessary precautions beforehand to avoid any unpleasant experiences.

Following are some such precautions which should be taken before planning a vacation to Mexico during this season:

• Regularly check the weather forecasts to stay updated with any cyclone predictions for the current year; you can also periodically check the National Hurricane Centre website.
• Check the hurricane policy of the hotel you plan to stay in, it goes a long way to keep you safe in case any natural calamity occurs during your stay.
• It is safer to plan a vacation away from the coastal areas as then; you would not be directly affected if a cyclone hits the Mexican coast unexpectedly.
• Purchase travel insurance before leaving for the holiday, and always have emergency contacts with whom you share a detailed itinerary.

June to August experiences high temperature ranging from 30-40 degree Celcius. These are also the months which experience high rainfall, and are often referred to as the ‘hurricane season’. However, since Mexico also receives plenty of sunshine, rainy days do not usually hamper tourist activities daily. The summer rainfall is hard to predict, and it is therefore suggested to check the weather forecast well in advance before planning a summer vacation to Mexico. 

• There are two popular holidays during summer in Mexico- one is the National Maritime Day on 1st June, and the other is the birthday of celebrated artist Frida Kahlo (on 6th July) which is celebrated widely in the country.
• July witnesses the Guelaguetza Festival in the Oaxaca City. This festival is a celebration of art forms such as music and dance located in the folklores of the region and is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the country’s indigenous culture — the month of August celebrates the festival of La Morisma in the colonial city of Zacatecas.

During the autumn months, Mexico has an average temperature of around 20 degrees celsius in the northern parts and about 30 degrees celsius in the southern regions. The coastal waters become significantly cooler during the autumn season. This period also coincides with the peak season due to its favourable weather conditions such as moderate temperature and the retreating autumn rains.

• The independence day of Mexico falls on 16th September and is a major holiday in the country.
• Some important festivals to look forward to during this season are Fiestas de Octubre, the Day of the Dead (during 1st and 2nd November), Fiesta de Santa Cecilia (celebrated on 22nd November), and the Morelia International Film Festival.

During the winter months in Mexico, the temperature falls to around 20 degrees celsius. The highlands of northern Mexico experiences snowfall during this season. Being located in the temperate zone, Mexico does not witness harsh winters. Instead, the weather conditions (except in the mountains) are quite pleasant and are ideal for planning a vacation.

The major holidays such as Christmas and New Year fall during the winter season, of course, and are grandly celebrated in most parts of the country. In February, the San Jarocho Music Festival takes place. It is a happening event to witness and takes place in the beautiful riverside town of Tlacotalpan.

The spring months in Mexico experience an average temperature of around 23 to 25 degrees Celsius, and the temperature increases to 28 to 30 degrees Celsius in May. The rainfall begins in April and increases towards the following months. However, parts of Mexico is beautiful during the rainy season as well, especially the Greenlands, and therefore rainy seasons do not put a stop to the influx of tourists into the country. The coastal water is warm during these months, whereas the mountain peaks are still covered with snow.

The main cultural event to watch out for during this season is the Festival de Mexico, which takes place during March. This two-week event is hosted in multiple locations (more than 40 venues) throughout the country, and attract musicians and music lovers from all over the world. Some major holidays such as the Easter holidays also happen during these months. Another important event is the nine-day carnival held in Veracruz and Mazatlan during mid-March.
