Auli is a popular skiing destination in India because of its glittering slopes and clean environment. Dotted with apple orchards, oaks and deodars, Auli is a popular hill town with numerous ski resorts situated amidst the Himalayan range. Located at 2800 meters above sea levels, it is home to mountain ranges of Nanda Devi, Mana Parvat and Kamat Kamet. Many religious destinations are also scattered around Auli. It is believed that Shankracharya had blessed Auli with his visit.

Skiing Destination of India

The Garhwal Himalayas have clean steep slopes that make the scenic hill town a favorite skiing destination among the tourists. Because of the height and vast stretch, the mountains can give all the avid skiers an experience of their lifetime. It is also famous for its artificial snowfall and hence it is a premier ski resort to enjoy the best skiing experience. The cluster of Oak and Deodar trees spread all over the slopes tend to reduce wind velocity and ensure a real smooth ski ride. In addition to that, it has a foot chair lift and a ski lift that connects the lower and upper mountain slopes and can take you to the peak above in a jiffy.

History of Auli

As far back as history goes, it is believed that the lands of Auli were first trodden on by the great Guru Adi Shankaracharya. He built a temple at Joshimath which exists to date. In the years to follow, Auli was inhabited by semi-nomadic tribes called Bhotiyas. They were of Mongolian origin and established a flourished trade with Tibet on their yaks. Later, Auli became a training ground for the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force. After the formation of Uttarakhand from Uttar Pradesh, Auli became a part of the Uttarakhand state and was marketed as a tourist destination.

Auli Cable Car

Auli boasts of Asia's longest and one of the highest cable car (Gondola) ride covering a total distance of 4 kms and operates at a height of 3010 metres above the sea level. The lower station is Joshimath and it takes an approximate time of 25 minutes to reach Auli. It has 10 towers and can carry 25 passengers in one trip. A return ride costs 1000 INR (approx.) for a single person. Kids above the age of 5 years are charged fully. The cable car starts operating at 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM in the evening. What is the best way to reach Auli?

If planning to visit Auli, your most probably you will be reaching from Delhi or Badrinath.

From Delhi

The best way to reach Auli is to take a bus from Delhi to Rishikesh. This is an overnight journey.
From Rishikesh, either you can take a private cab direct to Auli (9 hours) or a shared taxi till Joshimath (8 hours). A more fun way would be to take a shared cab till Joshimath and from there, get on the Second Longest Cable Car in India from Joshimath to Auli. This cable car is 16 kms long, takes 22 minutes and blesses you with breathtaking views of the Garhwal Ranges of Himalayas and then take a cab from Rishikesh to Joshimath.

Do remember that cab/bus operators do not drive after sunset on the roads between Rishikesh and Joshimath, they might promise you but it is risky.

From Badrinath

Many cabs carry passengers from Badrinath to Auli. The Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun is the closest airport. You can also drive the 16 km roadway from Joshimath to Auli.

Yes of course, my daughter is 15 month old when we went their, just pack some extra warm clothes for baby, like one extra layer than yourself and you are good to go.
