Zanzibar Land Animals Park, known as ZALA, is a small reptile-focused animal park about 5 kilometres from Jozani forest, set up to teach local schoolchildren about the island's endangered wildlife. Visitors are shown snakes, chameleons, monitor lizards, hyrax and small antelope in open-air enclosures, and handling the animals is part of the standard tour, which is worth knowing if you would rather not. We have not been able to confirm that it is still operating, so check locally before making the trip.
ZALA is home to native species living in a natural environment. Animals like big pythons, chameleons, geckos, tortoises, crabs, dik-dik, striped lizards, monitor lizards, and hyrax are part of the park. The surroundings also feature fruit trees such as orange, lime, grapefruit, nutmeg, banana, ginger, chillies, black peppers, and cinnamon. Beyond being a place to learn about animals, Zala Park was founded to help local people understand and appreciate the value of wildlife conservation.
