Menar, Udaipur Overview
Menar is a village built around a lake and bird sanctuary where the local Rajput and Bhil communities have long practised bird conservation, giving migratory birds unusual protection here compared to elsewhere in the region. Demoiselle cranes and other migratory species pass through in large numbers during winter. It's a niche stop, best suited to travellers specifically interested in bird photography rather than general sightseeing.
There are a number of private tours that take visitors around the village so that one can catch glimpses of many migratory birds such as Pelicans, Common cranes, River Terns, Pied kingfishers, Crow pheasants and more. The best time to visit is during the winter months when the bird population here is at its highest. Moreover, there is a path along the edge of the lake for visitors to talk on while they try to spot birds through binoculars. The local government often organises a bird fair here in December.
