Badi Lake, Udaipur Overview

Situated a little on the outskirts of the city, Badi Lake is an artificial freshwater lake situated in Udaipur. Built by Maharaja Raj Singh between 1652 and 1680, Badi Lake sprawls over a humongous area of 155 sq. km. Ideal as a popular picnic spot, Badi Lake also boasts of utter peace and tranquility as it is devoid of the regular tourist crowd. The lake is also ideal for a swim and there are several kiosks (shamiyanas) installed along the embankments which are meant for people to sit down and relax.

There is also a hilltop called ‘Bahubali’ near the Badi Lake that is a major attraction at the place. From here, you can have a mesmerizing aerial view of the surroundings. Considered most ideal to spend some quality time with yourself or in company, the hill is best known for the scintillating sunrise and sunset views.

Trek to Bahubali at Badi Lake

There is a crocodile like hilltop that has been discovered near the lake very recently. This hill is called Bahubali and you can reach here by a short trek that is gaining a lot of momentum and popularity in the tourist circle lately. The trek is rather tricky so it is advisable not to take children along. To start this trek, you can take the right diversion from Badi Lake. Move in the direction of the ‘Silence Resort’ unless you encounter a tin shop and a temple across it.

The left diversion from the tin shop can take you to the hilltop. You can either ride a bicycle uphill or simply walk. The trail is very rocky and rather twisted so it is advised to stay careful. Besides encountering gorgeous views of the surroundings, there are also several magnificent hills in the backdrop. And when you reach the top of the hill, the view from there is beyond description. You can get absorbed in nature’s beauty or read a book or sit for a picnic or simply relax and reflect.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the lake is during the early hours of the morning when the fresh rays from the sun are kissing the blue waters of the lake. Another time when you can visit the lake is during sunset when the sky is coloured with a medley of colours ranging from orange to purple. Besides, it is best if you visit here during the monsoons when the rains have washed off all the dust and the area looks refreshingly clean, alive and fresh.
