Fateh Sagar Lake, Udaipur Overview

Fateh Sagar Lake is an artificial lake named after Maharana Fateh Singh of Udaipur and Mewar and built to the northwest of Udaipur. Built in 1687, it is the second-largest of the four lakes of Udaipur city. Boating here in the backdrop of Aravali is a must-do activity. Different types of boats are available at the service of the patrons, and you can choose your pick from the same. The sunsets here are incredibly picturesque, and you must visit this destination to witness the same!

One can witness the circumference of the Fateh Sagar Lake by driving on the Moti Magri Road and get a fantastic view of the entire lake. The Fateh Sagar Lake is sprawled over one square kilometre and is divided into three distinct islands. The largest is called Nehru Park and houses a boat-shaped restaurant and a small zoo for kids. It also doubles as a famous picnic spot.

The second island has a public park with water-jet fountains. Finally, the third island comprises the best solar observing site in Asia, the Udaipur Solar Observatory.

During drought conditions, when the rainfall is scarce, water storage in the lake is insufficient to meet the needs. Cetyl alcohol (hexadecanol) is sprayed over the lake surface to prevent water loss due to evaporation.

History of Fateh Sagar Lake

Originally, Maharana Jai Singh constructed the Fateh Sagar Lake in the year 1687. However, about 200 years later, the earthen bund forming the lake got washed away, thereby razing the lake. Subsequently, Maharana Fateh Singh built the Connaught dam in 1889, which gave shape to the present-day lake and to honour him, it was renamed Fateh Sagar Lake.

Events at Fateh Sagar Lake

Fateh Sagar Lake is one of the few venues that host the town's hottest national and international events. One of the most awaited events held here is the World Music Festival, a three-day celebration of music and all that it represents. Generally held sometime during February, you can witness mesmerising performances by national and international artists. Be it poems or soul-stirring instrumentals; you are bound to find your kind of music here.

Another important festival held at the Fateh Sagar Lake is the Hariyali Amavasya Mela which sees a great footfall every year. Also known as the Green New Moon Fair, this celebration is held during August/September or Shravan. It is a colourful celebration of the onset of the monsoon season and is celebrated over three days. During these days, fun, festivities and various cultural festivals are held to welcome the rains.

Private and state-owned cabs can be easily found from any part of the city and will drop you to Fateh Sagar Lake. Tuk-tuks are also a popular mode of transport in Udaipur, which will ferry you to your destination at a very cheap cost. You can also hire a cab to drop you right at the threshold of the lake.
