Jaisalmer to Udaipur

Due to no availability of direct trains from Jaisalmer to Udaipur, the most preferred way of travelling to Udaipur is taking a cab or self-driving. These two cities are amongst the biggest tourist attractions in Rajasthan, which is why taxi operating services are a common and prime business in both cities.

It is very easy to find a taxi operator in Jaisalmer that will take you to Udaipur. If you take a walk around the roads near the Jaisalmer Fort or near the Jaisalmer Bus Stand, you can see taxis and jeeps just waiting for tourists to arrive and ask them if they want a point tour. You can ask those taxi and car drivers if they can drive you to Udaipur and quote your own price. Your negotiation skills will come handy as you bargain for the amount that you want to travel in. The options are huge. Apart from the taxi drivers that you can find all across the city, there are many travel and tour operator offices lining the sides of the road in the whole of Jaisalmer. You can head to them and ask them for a cab to Udaipur, ask for the required car, time of leaving and check for their authenticity.

If you want to avoid the hassle of booking a taxi in the city, you can book them online. Savaari, Get me a cab, Gozo cabs, Rajputana Cabs etc, are the go-to websites for booking an outstation chauffeur driven taxi. The road distance between Jaisalmer and Udaipur is 488 kilometres, via NH 48 and it takes around 8 to 9 hours to reach Udaipur. There are even one-way cab rentals that can drop you to Udaipur if you do not wish to return to Jaisalmer back and have to visit another city from Udaipur. To get a cheaper alternative, you can look for carpooling options as well. There are also cabs that offer travel packages for Udaipur City, and you can avail them if you wish to.

Jaisalmer - Sangarh - Sheo - Bhadka - Barmer - Sindhari - Sayla - Mandoli - Sirohi - Pindwara - Gogunda - Udaipur (489 kms - 8 hours 30 minutes)

Route 2

(via Jodhpur) Jaisalmer - Chandan - Pokhran - Dechu - Jodhpur - Pali - Ranakpur - Udaipur (528 kms - 8 hours 40 minutes)

Road Condition

The Jaisalmer Phalsund Road is in good condition and driving is not so much of a challenge. The highway road nestles between rocky mountain, and it is a small winding road to Ranakpur. From Barmer, the terrain is excellent and one cam gear up to 150 kmph. The Barmer Road is NH15 is in excellent condition. In the second route, which goes via Jodhpur, the road till Pali is not that good, but from Pali to Jodhpur, the road condition is good for the drivers. Till Pokhran again, the roads are great, passing through beautiful landscapes.

Another good alternative for travelling by road from Jaisalmer to Udaipur is taking buses. There are numerous Rajasthan State Transport Corporation (RSTC) Government buses as well privately operated buses for you to choose from. Buses are less preferred over cabs and taxis because they take 12-13 hours, which is more than cabs. Also, cabs are much more comfortable, and you can make stopovers whenever you want. The prospective travellers must, however, note that RSTC does not operate many buses between the two cities, so options are limited.

The buses take the Jodhpur route and cover a distance of about 528 kms. You can book the bus tickets from popular bus ticket booking sites such as Red Bus and also on the RSTC's official website. The journey is a long one, so you should choose a comfortable, AC seater or sleeper to get through the usually hot weather conditions. If you wish to stay overnight at Jodhpur in between, then you can take a bus to Jodhpur, and then take a bus from Jodhpur to Udaipur the other day.

Apart from RSRTC, the popular bus operators serving this route are Hanuman Travels, Hai Bajrang Travel Agency, Sodha Travels, Swagat Travels and Thar Travels. A comfortable option is to take an overnight bus so that you have the whole day saved to yourself for local sightseeing in Udaipur. City Palace, Bagore ki Haveli etc. close by evening, so you must reach by morning if you want to cover this on the same day.
