However, the rule did not last too long. By the middle of the 14th century, the Delhi Sultanate in the Madurai kingdom was replaced by the Vijayanagar Empire. The reign of the Vijayanagar Empire is said to be the most significant era in the history of Trichy. The profound impact of the empire is evident from the articulately constructed Hindu temples. Trichy witnessed two Carnatic wars. The second war took place in 1749 and resulted in the enthronement of Muhammed Ali Khan Wallajah. During the British rule, Trichy was famous for being the home of ‘Cherkoot’, also known as the Trichinopoly cigar. Trichy was given the standard of a municipality in the year 1866. The city played a vital role in the Indian Independence Movement.
