Cueva del Viento

Cueva del Viento, Tenerife Overview

Wind Cave or Cave of the Wind, is the largest volcanic tube in Europe and the sixth largest worldwide. It is an 18 km-long tunnel located in the northwestern part of Tenerife. The difficulty level for this hike is average and takes a maximum of three hours to complete.

The Wind Cave is a maze-like underground passageway that was formed due to the volcanic eruptions of Pico Viejo nearly 27,000 years ago. This tunnel consists of lava cascades, lava stalactites, lateral terraces as well as lava lakes and is, therefore, truly a marvel of nature.

Cueva del Viento is a volcanic cavity which was formed over 27000 years ago from the basaltic lavas released from the first eruptive phase of the Pico Viejo volcano, located next to Mount Tiede. It extends more than 17 kms and there are three different levels of passageways filled with lava pits and terraces. The caves are rich in fossils of Canarian mega fauna and the bones of Gallotia goliath and Canariomys bravoi have also been found here. There are archaeological remains of the Guanches, the ancient inhabitants of Tenerife, as well.
