Candi Sukuh, Surakarta Overview

Candi Sukuh is located on the slopes of Mt. Lawu in Indonesia on the borders of Central and East Java provinces . It is a 15th century old Javanese-Hindu temple where Candi in Indonesia means temple. It is also known to be an erotic temple where the entrance is marked by a large lingam(phallus) and yoni, the cravings and art on the temple is unique are almost all erotic portraits and makes this different from other Javanese temple and is believed by the locals that it was a pre-Hindu place of worship during that era.

The temple is beautiful, isolated and the surroundings are full of greeneries. Even though many parts of the temple are destroyed by natural causes, the government was able to preserve most of the temple. Some lingams were moved to a museum but many of the cravings are still there. It is a must visit site. 

The temple is opened early in the morning till afternoon and all days for tourists. Though it is less crowded due to its location, you can have a relaxing time in the temple and learn about its history. Sarongs are required to visit this temple and you can easily rent one at the entrance by paying a small donation. As it is situated around 2,900 ft above sea level, so the weather condition at the site can be cold or rainy.
