Mesjid Agung, Surakarta, Surakarta Overview

Located on street no. 1 Kauman, Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia, it is a royal 18th century mosque of the Aurakata Sunanate. The mosque was built by Sunan Pakubuwono III in the year 1768. It was a holy and spiritual place built for both friday mosques and for the traditions and rituals conducted by the royal family. The mosque is still in use and has a religious significance for the local people.

The mosque is spread over a large area 19,180 sqm and is bordered by solid walls. The mosque has two halls: one in the front and the other is dedicated to prayers only. The design, art and architecture represent the conservative Javanese tradition. The roof is shaped as a pyramid in tanjung style, which represents it to be a traditional sacred building. The roof of the mosque is three tiered with an mustaka (ornament) on top.

As this place has historical importance and people still visit there for friday prayers, the place is considered more of a prayer hall than an attraction site. The mosque is beautiful when it comes to its design and architecture. It has a serene and relaxing environment.  With ease of access for people of all religious beliefs, this mosque is a site to witness some holy and spiritual practices that have become a tradition. 

For those visiting by car, there is plenty of parking space available here. People are friendly, but you must ensure to respect the traditions and religious beliefs of the people.
