Tulip Festival in Srinagar, Srinagar Overview
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar holds South Asia's largest Tulip Festival in the months of April - May near the Dal Lake. It is nestled at the foothills of Zabarwan Range in Srinagar which provides the grandeur of the Dal Lake. One of the most awaited festivals of Kashmir, the Tulip Festival celebrates the blooming season of the lovely Tulips that adorn the garden. Named after the former Prime Minister of India, Late Indira Gandhi, this is where the aesthetic dream of viewing a thousand tulips at once comes to life. The festival is celebrated in the garden every year, at the onset of spring, with an intension to promote floriculture and tourism in Kashmir and of course for the visitor's delight.
Where is the Tulip Festival Kashmir Celebrated?
The Tulip festival is celebrated in the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, situated at the foothills of Zabarwan Range in Srinagar of the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. The garden is spread in an approximate area of thirty hectares, thus providing grandeur in the beauty of the festival. The garden is located in the Cheshma Shahi Road of Rainawari in the city of Srinagar. It has become a significant tourist attraction since its opening, and tourists from all over the country visit here for their love of Tulips - and other flowers - and for taking a peek in the cultural and natural beauty of the state of Jammu &Kashmir.
About the Tulip Garden in Srinagar
The Tulip Garden was opened in the year 2007 and is owned by the Government of Jammu & Kashmir. Its earlier name was Model Floriculture Center. The garden is operated by the Department of Floriculture of the Jammu & Kashmir government.
Spread across an approximate area of thirty hectares, the landscape is formed in terraced style, with flower beds scattered upon seven terraces. Situated at the foothills of Zabarwan Range, which is located between Pir Panjal and the Great Himalayan Range, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden provides a view of the famous Dal lake of Kashmir. Although Tulip flowers - with its sixty varieties present in the garden - are a majority in number, there are significant numbers of other species of flowers too like Hyacinths, Daffodils, and Ranunculus which are found in good numbers.
About the Tulip festival - An Extravaganza of Flowers
Tulip festival is celebrated each year in spring when flowers are at the peak of their bloom. The Garden was opened up in the year 2007, and the Tulip festival is held each year to promote tourism in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The garden and the festival was adjudged, in the year 2014, as the second largest in the world.
Apart from the beauty of flowers, the visitors are also given the option to buy local handicrafts and clothes from the local inhabitants who run their stalls in the garden, during the festival.
Traditional music is also a form of entertainment offered to visitors during the festivity. Local artists, as well as performers of rock music too, are present to showcase their art form, giving the atmosphere the most pleasant touch, along with the scene which is already picturesque.
How to Reach the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden
The nearest airport, the Sheikh Ul-Alam International Airport, is situated in the city of Srinagar itself, and only at a distance of 18 kilometres from the Tulip garden. A bus or a taxi can be hired from the airport to reach the garden.
The Srinagar Railway Station is the nearest which is situated at a meagre distance of 15 kilometres from the Tulip Garden.
