Campo Di Fiori has a very rich and significant history. This location, for centuries, had been used as a site for public executions, races, and patios. This place stands where the Temple of Venus Victrix stood in ancient Rome. Here, philosopher Giordano Bruno was burned for heresy, as he argued in favour of the Copernicus theory that the universe was infinite (at the time, it was considered finite). This is marked by the statue by Ettore Ferrari’s sinister statue of the hooked monk. In the mid 15th century, this place was demolished and the square was formed. Since then, it has been used as a marketplace where a horse market was held twice a week. By the late 1800s, Campo Di Fiori had regularly started opening markets, selling street goods, meat, fruits, veggies, walnuts, and spices. Today, Campo Di Fiori is one of the oldest as well as leading marketplaces in the city and is known for its Roman specialities.
