Prabalgad Fort, also known asÔ_Kalavantin DurgÔ_is situated between Matheran and Panvel in Maharashtra, at a height of 2,300 feet in the Western Ghats. The fort built at the peak of a rocky plateau very close to Matheran has become a major tourist attraction. A trek to this place is perfect for those who enjoy adventure and the way to the fort is a dangerously steep climb. The steps leading up to the fort are cut into the rock of the hill. Reaching the fort is one of the toughest trekking challenges in Maharashtra and only if you are an experienced trekker should you go for this trek. This trek which commences from base village of Shedung, takes about 3 hours and you need to climb rock-cut stairs through a steep slope.
October to May is the best time to visit this place as the weather is very pleasant and the time is ideal for trekking. You might want to avoid trekking in monsoons as the steps can be very slippery and trekking can be dangerous in this season.
Air: The nearest airport is situated at Mumbai at a distance of about 50 km. Taxis are available at the airport and these are the easiest way to reach the city of Prabalgad.
Rail: Panvel is well connected to Navi Mumbai and Mumbai by road and rail. The transport system to the place is excellent. Buses, local trains and taxis are the main ways to reach Prabalgad from Panvel.
Road: State transport buses are available to most of the nearby places and there are two major bus stands that are present in the city of Panvel .Mumbai, Pune and Navi Mumbai have well linked bus services from Panvel. From Panvel, you can take a taxi to Prabalgad.
You have to walk on foot to see the Kalavantin Fort. At the base town of Prablagad, you can find autos and taxis to go around the place.

At the Prabalgad town, you can relish the country beauty of the village, farms and feel the beauty of the nature while taking a walk in jungle trails around the village. Other nearby sights which are worth visiting are Prabal Fort, Louisa Point and Pisanarth Temple.

The local people of Panvel enjoy drama and theatre. They take great pride inë_Marathië_theatre and adore the various genre of drama, such as political drama, comedy drama, tragedy and musical drama . The residents also take lots of interest in art and craft and keep organizing several events for that. Ganeshotsavë_orë_Ganesh Chaturthi, Aashadi Ekadashië_orë_Dev-Shayani Ekadashi, Maha Shivratrië_,Dahi-Handië_,Vijayadashamië_orë_Dasara,ë_Navaratri,ë_Holi,ë_Diwali, andë_Eidë_are the festivals celebrated on a large scale in this place.
The place does not have any nightlife.

There are a few decent restaurants in Prabalgad. However, you can find several great ones at Panvel. The Village, Neel Kamal, Malvan Tadka, Shabari, etc. are a few of the popular restaurants of Panvel.
The fort is best seen with trips to nearby towns of Lonavala, Khandala or Matheran. Board a train from Panvel and reach Thakurwadi which is the base village for trekking. Trek to Prabal Machi Village. Reach Prabal Machi village and have breakfast there. After that, continue with the trek to Kalavantin Durg. Reach the top of Kalavantin Durg and enjoy the scenic view from there. After that, return to the base village and have lunch. Explore the village and the plateau. While here, one might also want to visit similar but easier to reach forts at short distances such as Karnala Fort and Irshalgad.
Carry a water bottle with you during trekking and carry some snacks too. Wear proper trekking shoes. It is best to hire a guide while visiting the place.

Information given on this page needs correction. It is written as Prabalgad is also called as Kalavantin Durg. This is not correct, both are distinct and different forts near to each other.
