History

The Gregory Lake was built by, and named after Sir William Gregory, in 1873. It was initially a swampy area in the outskirts of the city. Sir William directed the construction of a dam over the Thalagala stream, which formed the lake. Fish reinhabited the lake, and it slowly sprang to life. The waters of the lake were also used to generate electricity through hydropower plants. Currently, the lake is a recreation spot, with different water-based activities.
